Our Story

Chris Oberheim was a 44 year-old Champaign police officer who was shot and killed while on duty on May 19th, 2021. Chris, an excellent police officer with 20 years of experience, was responding to a call for help. He and another officer were coming to the aid of a woman and her children. They engaged the perpetrator and within 7.5 seconds he began firing his unlawfully-possessed gun at Officer Oberheim and his partner.

Officer Oberheim left behind his wife, Amber, and 4 daughters, Hannah, Avery, Addison, & Aubree. On the day of his funeral, they made a commitment to all police officers. They committed to defend their name, their purpose, their honor, and their badge. As a result, Amber and her daughters created a God-serving foundation in Chris’s honor called Peacemaker Project 703. 

Chris Oberheim had a servant’s heart that revolved around loving his family and protecting others. Chris was not only a police officer, he was also a son, beloved coach, trusted friend, and respected leader. He fulfilled the roles of husband and father best.

Chris began his career at Decatur Police Department in 2000. He quickly became a respected officer within the department who led by silent example. He maintained a sense of humility even when receiving recognition for his heroic actions. Chris transferred to Champaign Police Department in 2008 where he continued to protect and serve his community. He received two medals of valor for his courageous acts of selfless bravery.

Chris made it very apparent that his family was his first priority. His four daughters were his absolute pride and joy. The lessons instilled and the honor in their hearts will be used to carry on the legacy of their father.
